About the Role

The East African Community (EAC), in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is tackling major environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and illegal wildlife trade. These issues threaten biodiversity and regional economies, making conservation efforts essential.

To support these initiatives, the NaturAfrica project, funded by the European Union (EU), has introduced a GIS Officer position at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. This role is critical in monitoring shared ecosystems using satellite and earth observation technologies. The officer will work closely with the EAC’s Resource Conservation and Regional Management Directorate (RCRMD) to enhance data-driven decision-making for sustainable conservation efforts across the region.

If you have expertise in GIS, mapping, and spatial data analysis, this is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to meaningful environmental conservation efforts while working with an international network of experts.

Key Responsibilities

1. GIS and Spatial Data Management

  • Lead GIS-related activities for the NaturAfrica project – EAC component, including monitoring and assessing Transboundary Conservation Areas (TBCAs).
  • Develop a Methodological Framework for mapping, trend analysis, and monitoring of TBCAs.
  • Create interactive maps in collaboration with experts from the Regional Centre of Excellence (RCMRD).
  • Regularly update the TBCA portal with relevant conservation activities, with support from RCMRD, EAC, and IUCN specialists.
  • Assist in disseminating GIS-based conservation data via online platforms.

2. Technical Support & Capacity Building

  • Provide GIS support to the Department of Environment & Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism and Wildlife Management at the EAC.
  • Offer technical guidance and leadership to ensure GIS initiatives align with conservation goals.
  • Identify and build partnerships with key stakeholders, including EAC Secretariat, partner states, and conservation agencies.
  • Participate in EAC and IUCN coordination meetings, offering valuable GIS-related insights.

3. Program Development & Fundraising

  • Identify and prioritize strategic GIS initiatives in natural resource conservation and management.
  • Support fundraising efforts by securing funding for GIS-driven conservation projects that align with the NaturAfrica program.
  • Collaborate with the IUCN GIS expert to ensure high-quality program implementation.

4. Additional Duties

  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned by the Regional Programme Manager.
