Job Overview

We are seeking an Associate Scientist – Natural Resource and Climate Change to lead and support research initiatives focused on natural resource management (NRM), landscape restoration, and climate change. This role will emphasize agroforestry, agriculture, and forestry ecosystems in Tanzania.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of research and development initiatives in agro-ecology and soil health within agroforestry, agriculture, and forestry ecosystems.
  • Support the development of tree seed and seedling supply systems, including the domestication of indigenous tree species and value addition.
  • Contribute to research in bioenergy and the circular bioeconomy in Tanzania.
  • Engage in climate change mitigation research across agriculture, forestry, and related ecosystems.
  • Participate in climate finance research, including carbon farming programs.
  • Oversee field operations for CIFOR-ICRAF’s biophysical research and development projects in Tanzania.
  • Supervise local partners, institutions, students, and research collaborators working on various projects.
  • Train farmers, partners, interns, and students on agroforestry and key aspects of CIFOR-ICRAF research.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, manuals, policy briefs, and scientific publications.
  • Support policy development in agroforestry, climate change, and natural resource management (NRM).
  • Work with the Country Representative to mobilize resources for CIFOR-ICRAF programs in Tanzania.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Agroforestry, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management (NRM), Forestry, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of agroforestry, climate change, and NRM programs in Tanzania.
  • At least three years of experience in research and fieldwork related to agroforestry, agriculture, climate change, forestry, or NRM.
  • Proven experience in leading fieldwork, training farmers, and scaling up technology-driven solutions.

Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Experience with climate change adaptation and mitigation projects.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, with a track record of contributing to publications and resource mobilization efforts.
  • Excellent oral communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including statistical analysis tools.

Employment Terms & Conditions

  • This is a locally recruited position.
  • Competitive remuneration in local currency, based on skills and experience.
  • Duty station: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
