Job Summary

LWR is seeking a Technical Manager – Animal Feed and Health for a five-year USDA-funded project aimed at developing Tanzania’s poultry value chain. The project focuses on:
✔ Strengthening the animal feed sector
✔ Improving animal health management
✔ Enhancing agricultural finance services
✔ Expanding extension services in Mbeya, Iringa, Songwe, and Rukwa

The Technical Manager will lead poultry feed formulation, vaccination, biosecurity, and disease prevention while collaborating with the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development (MLDF) and other key stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

1. Animal Feed and Health Management

✔ Build the capacity of feed millers to ensure a consistent supply of feed ingredients (maize, soybean, alternatives)
✔ Train feed millers on batch testing, food safety, GMP, and HACCP
✔ Promote Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) and biosecurity risk management among poultry farmers
✔ Strengthen TVLA, Veterinary Council of Tanzania (VCT), and MLDF systems for disease detection and reporting
✔ Support disease outbreak management through training for public and private vets
✔ Develop a climate-sensitive poultry disease monitoring system in collaboration with the Digital Lead
✔ Provide technical support on poultry production (feeds, breeding, housing, waste management)
✔ Prepare and edit reports, manuals, and guidelines related to animal feed and health

2. Stakeholder Engagement & Training

✔ Serve as the main liaison with the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development
✔ Train poultry farmers, millers, and veterinary professionals in poultry health and nutrition
✔ Develop training curricula and materials for improved animal health practices
✔ Work closely with public and private partners to strengthen veterinary and poultry farming services

Qualifications & Experience

🎓 Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Health, or Livestock Feed

💼 Experience:

  • At least 5 years in poultry/livestock sector (public or private)
  • Expertise in poultry feed formulation, biosecurity, and vaccinations
  • Experience developing training materials and curricula

📌 Additional Skills:
✔ Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
✔ Ability to work with government, NGOs, and private sector stakeholders
✔ Fluency in English and Swahili (written and spoken)
✔ Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting


Working Conditions & Travel

🌍 Location: Mbeya, Tanzania
📅 Work Schedule: Hybrid (Remote & In-Person)
🚗 Travel: Required within Tanzania for fieldwork and stakeholder meetings
