Role Purpose

Reporting to the Superintendent Rigging, the Specialist – Cranes & Rigging will oversee all heavy lifting operations and rigging activities at the mine site. The role ensures that all lifting tasks are carried out efficiently, safely, and in compliance with relevant industry regulations. This specialist will also be responsible for maintaining lifting equipment, coaching rigging and crane operators, and collaborating with multiple teams to optimize safety and operational efficiency.

Qualifications & Certifications

• Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent.
• Valid Crane Operator’s Certificate.
• Scaffolding Certification.
• International qualification as a Rigger/Ropes Man.
• Level 3 International Rigging Certificate.
• Lifting Machinery Inspection (LMI) Certificate.
• Certified Technical Test Invigilator and Examiner by an accredited international certification body.
• Valid Tanzanian Driver’s License (Class B, D, E, F) or an International Driver’s License.
• Certified by an approved Training Board to conduct training sessions.
• Registered Rigger with a recognized industry body.

Experience Required

• 4 years of training in Cranes, Lifting, and Rigging.
• 5 years of hands-on experience as a Rigger/Ropes Man and Crane Operator.
• 1+ year of supervisory experience, preferably in lifting operations within the mining or a similar heavy industry.
• Strong knowledge of mine safety laws and lifting gear regulations.
• Proficiency in mathematical calculations related to load assessments.
• Hands-on experience with rigging operations and lifting critical controls.
• Well-versed in OSHA 2003 (No.05 of 2003) and ISO 18001 certifications.

Additional Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CAD software for technical drawings.
• Strong understanding of Tanzanian mining regulations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Key Responsibilities

1. Training, Development & Coaching

• Design and schedule training programs for crane, hoist, and lifting equipment operators.
• Conduct performance assessments and hands-on examinations for rigging and lifting personnel.
• Ensure that all personnel involved in lifting operations maintain their certifications and competency levels.

2. Operational Planning & Coordination

• Assist in planning and executing lifting activities for infrastructure development and equipment installations.
• Provide technical expertise for moving heavy machinery and constructing large-scale mining facilities.
• Develop detailed lifting plans for complex and high-risk operations.
• Work closely with different departments to optimize lifting schedules and minimize disruptions.

3. Safety Inspections & Compliance

• Investigate lifting-related incidents and near misses, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
• Prepare detailed reports on lifting incidents, violations, and recommendations for safety improvements.

4. Regulatory Compliance & Training

• Ensure that all lifting operations comply with Tanzanian Mining Regulations and OSHA 2003 (No.05 of 2003, Section 14-22).
• Provide training on statutory obligations and industry best practices for lifting operations.

5. Safety Enforcement & Risk Management

• Promote a culture of safety and enforce strict zero-tolerance policies for non-compliance.
• Conduct training on pre-use inspections of rigging gears, slings, and lifting devices.
• Ensure lifting operations align with AngloGold Ashanti’s safety standards to prevent accidents in high-risk areas.
• Perform regular risk assessments and hazard analyses for underground, open-pit, and surface mining operations.
• Monitor safety protocols during lifting operations, including the correct use of rigging, crane operations, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

6. Equipment Maintenance & Management

• Oversee the selection, inspection, and maintenance of cranes, hoists, and lifting equipment.
• Ensure lifting gear is fit for purpose and complies with AGA safety standards.
• Coordinate scheduled maintenance and emergency repairs to prevent equipment downtime.

7. Supervision & People Management

• Supervise all rigging and lifting activities in line with GGML’s core values and operational principles.
• Ensure all work meets productivity and safety standards while safeguarding both personnel and equipment.
