SME Credit Officer – NBC (March 2025)

Job Summary

As an SME Credit Officer, your primary role is to manage and oversee credit-related activities, ensuring strict adherence to NBC’s Credit and Provisioning Policy as well as standard credit procedures. You will be responsible for assessing business risks, developing credit solutions, and ensuring the overall quality of the bank’s lending portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

1. Credit Assessment & Solutions Development (30%)

  • Analyze customers’ businesses to assess credit risks and determine their eligibility for financial products.
  • Develop high-quality credit solutions to facilitate timely and accurate credit decisions.
  • Act as a primary contact for credit-related matters, working closely with accountants, solicitors, and other financial professionals.
  • Prepare and sanction credit applications, escalating them for further review when necessary.

2. Business Risk Partnership (30%)

  • Work closely with Relationship Managers (RMs) to review new and existing credit applications.
  • Provide guidance on credit appetite and collaborate with product teams to structure appropriate solutions.
  • Liaise directly with the Head of Credit for applications that exceed individual approval limits.
  • Attend customer meetings alongside Relationship Managers to address credit-related issues.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs.
  • Oversee the preparation and execution of facility letters and ensure smooth loan disbursement.

3. Portfolio Management, Monitoring & Control (30%)

  • Oversee the management of financial information submitted by customers.
  • Ensure thorough risk assessments and challenge RMs on control lapses when necessary.
  • Monitor portfolio quality using Condition of Sanction triggers and address any emerging risks.
  • Work closely with sanctioning officers to address deteriorating financial trends and mitigate risks.

4. Team Collaboration & Leadership (10%)

  • Support team leaders in performance development initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning by mentoring and coaching team members.
  • Uphold NBC’s core values and guiding principles in daily operations.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in loan appraisals, credit risk management, or customer acquisition.
  • Strong understanding of NBC’s loan application processes and credit risk framework.
  • Knowledge of business-to-business financial services is an added advantage.
  • Up-to-date awareness of industry trends (both local and international).
