Job Location: Head Office, HQ

Job Purpose:

We are looking for a dedicated and experienced professional to oversee credit risk management within our Retail Banking portfolio. This role ensures compliance with lending practices while minimizing credit risk exposure in line with the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF). As part of the second line of defense, you will play a key role in safeguarding the bank’s financial health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support the identification, assessment, monitoring, and reporting of credit risks related to Retail Banking from a second-line perspective.
  • Facilitate scheduled and event-triggered credit portfolio reviews, identifying early warning signs, root causes, and implementing remedial actions with stakeholders.
  • Maintain and monitor key risk registers, key risk indicators (KRI), and control testing in collaboration with risk champions.
  • Supervise and mentor assigned staff, ensuring their performance aligns with business objectives through training and development.
  • Conduct thorough performance reviews of credit-related products within the portfolio and present findings to relevant forums.
  • Follow up with action owners to ensure timely closure of agreed remedial actions and escalate deviations when necessary.
  • Contribute to the periodic review and updates of key credit risk documents, including policies, risk appetite statements, and strategic plans.
  • Partner with the Credit Department and business segments to balance business growth with effective risk management.
  • Oversee the collateral review process to ensure adequate security for credit facilities.
  • Assist the Head of Credit Risk in ensuring accurate and timely reporting to risk management forums.
  • Represent the Credit Risk Unit in various business processes and projects, providing necessary insights and recommendations.
  • Ensure the department adheres to HR policies regarding business planning, performance management, and staff welfare.
  • Promote compliance with lending policies through coaching and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Oversee the approval process for credit terms and exceptions, ensuring adherence to regulatory and internal guidelines.
  • Provide leadership, motivation, and clear performance expectations to the team.
  • Monitor and report on the effectiveness of internal credit risk controls.
  • Stand in for the Head of Credit Risk when required and perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

  • Strong expertise in Retail Banking credit products, including consumer loans, digital lending, and microfinance.
  • Deep understanding of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework and risk management principles.
  • Knowledge of the entire credit process, from origination to special asset management.
  • Awareness of sector-specific risks and portfolio dynamics, including concentration and structural risks.
  • Familiarity with banking operations, financial markets, and regulatory requirements in Tanzania.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking abilities for engaging both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage tasks effectively in high-pressure environments.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Banking, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
  • A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in banking or financial institutions.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in Credit Risk Management, Retail Banking, or Auditing.
  • Proven experience in credit process management, product formulation, and risk assessment.
