Position Announcement: Research Associate

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), is seeking a qualified Research Associate to join our team. This position focuses on supporting the field implementation of the PAFIE-BSFL project, which aims to enhance black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) production as an alternative protein source for small-scale farmers in Kenya and Tanzania.

Key Responsibilities:
- Work closely with technical leads to design and implement field studies.
- Supervise BSFL technology trials conducted by BSF Breeding and Chanzi Ltd in Dar es Salaam and/or Arusha, ensuring accurate data collection for performance evaluation.
- Document waste feedstock streams used by Chanzi Ltd, tracking their types, quantities, and seasonal availability.
- Gather financial and economic data from BSF Breeding and Chanzi Ltd at different project stages (baseline, midline, endline) to assess the financial viability of BSF businesses.
- Collect financial and economic data from feed companies that incorporate BSFL as a protein ingredient in their products.
- Oversee data collection for on-farm experimental trials evaluating the impact of BSFL-based compound feeds and BSFL-derived frass on maize and legume forages.
- Assist in preparing research ethics applications, data-sharing agreements, and project progress reports.
- Contribute to data analysis, result interpretation, and the preparation of reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
- Organize and facilitate project activities, including stakeholder engagement, farmer mobilization for BSFL interventions, and conducting feedback sessions and workshops.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience:
- Master’s degree in livestock sciences, agricultural economics, or a related field.
- Minimum of three years of experience in livestock value chains, with a focus on climate-smart productivity innovations and waste management.
- Relevant professional certification.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Contract and Benefits:
- Initial contract duration: Two years (renewable based on performance and funding availability).
