About the Position

Aga Khan University (AKU) is seeking a Research Assistant to support the PartoMa Project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This role is crucial in ensuring the successful execution of the project, focusing on data collection, participant recruitment, and research coordination. The ideal candidate will be passionate about maternal and neonatal health research, possess strong data management skills, and be able to work effectively in clinical and community settings.


Key Responsibilities

1. Field Research & Data Collection

  • Travel to field sites to recruit research participants and obtain informed consent.
  • Collect both qualitative and quantitative data, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and adherence to ethical guidelines.

2. Data Management

  • Review, clean, and compile research data, ensuring its integrity and security.
  • Follow up on missing or incomplete information to maintain data accuracy.

3. Interviews & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Conduct face-to-face and telephone interviews with healthcare providers, patients, and community members.
  • Engage clinical and community partners to support research efforts.

4. Project Coordination & Reporting

  • Assist in preparing research materials, interview guides, and presentations.
  • Contribute to drafting reports and maintaining project documentation.

5. Meetings & Training Support

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and attending research meetings, seminars, and workshops.
  • Undergo necessary training related to research ethics, data collection, and compliance with study protocols.

6. Equipment & Resource Management

  • Ensure proper use, maintenance, and availability of research tools and materials.

Qualifications & Skills Required

Education & Professional Background

  • Degree, diploma, or certificate from an accredited medical institution.
  • Qualified Nurse, Midwife, or Clinical Officer (One year of clinical experience is an added advantage).

Experience & Technical Skills

  • At least one year of experience in clinical research, including data collection and participant interviews.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) for data entry and analysis.
  • Familiarity with both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Language & Communication Skills

  • Fluency in both English and Swahili (spoken and written).
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of safety, infection control, and research ethics in healthcare settings.
  • Experience working in community-based health programs is a plus.
