Job Title: Radio Operator

Reporting to: Base Facilities Officer
Location: Liwale, Lindi

Job Purpose

The Radio Operator plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth and secure communication for MSF operations. This position involves managing VHF and HF radios according to MSF security protocols, ensuring high-quality and confidential radio transmissions to support mission and project activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate HF and VHF radios while strictly adhering to MSF security policies, ensuring confidentiality and avoiding sensitive or security-related information.
  • Maintain the quality and transmission capability of radio frequencies (HF and VHF) and set up or program frequencies as needed.
  • Accurately relay messages to the appropriate recipients and log all communications systematically.
  • Handle and respond to radio communications from approved organizations and relay relevant information accordingly.
  • Establish and maintain radio contact with reference bases (field and capital locations), following communication protocols and informing project coordinators of any security concerns.
  • Monitor and record the movement of personnel, vehicles, aircraft, and cargo, including departure and arrival times, passenger details, and planned routes, while promptly reporting any delays.
  • Supervise the use of VHF radio handsets, track their loaning process, and ensure proper follow-up.
  • Install, operate, and conduct preventive maintenance checks on assigned communication equipment, ensuring functionality and promptly reporting any loss, damage, or malfunction.
  • Keep the communications room and equipment well-maintained and organized.
  • Monitor and maintain HF and VHF radio batteries in good condition.
  • Provide basic radio communication training to MSF staff when required.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education:

  • A minimum of secondary school education is required.

Experience:

  • Prior experience as a radio operator or in a similar role is desirable.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of mathematics, mechanics, and electronic principles.
  • Ability to effectively operate radio communication systems.

Languages:

  • Fluency in both English and Swahili is essential.
