The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, and non-profit organization dedicated to assisting conflict-affected populations—including refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and host communities—across more than 40 countries.
Since the onset of the Burundi refugee crisis in 2015, DRC has been actively working in Tanzania, providing emergency response and support in three refugee camps located in the Kigoma Region. The organization focuses on various sectors, including:

Role Overview: GBV Legal Officer
DRC is seeking a GBV Legal Officer to support gender-based violence (GBV) survivors by ensuring they receive the proper legal assistance, including case management, legal counseling, legal awareness, and representation in court. This role is based in Nyarugusu Camp and operates under the direct supervision of the GBV Team Leader, with guidance from the Protection Coordinator and Protection Manager.
The position involves liaising with stakeholders, including law enforcement, judicial bodies, and community organizations, to improve access to justice for survivors. The GBV Legal Officer will collaborate closely with other GBV team members, different DRC departments, and partner organizations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Support & Case Management
- Adhere to GBV guiding principles, ensuring survivor safety, confidentiality, and dignity at all times.
- Provide legal counseling to GBV survivors, explaining their legal rights, available options, and the legal process.
- Facilitate legal aid and access to justice for survivors who opt for legal action, including escorting them to police stations and court hearings.
- Coordinate with prosecutors and judicial bodies to ensure survivors and witnesses receive necessary support before court sessions.
- Work alongside GBV Psychosocial Officers to ensure survivors receive ongoing psychosocial support and additional referrals as needed.
- Monitor the security risks survivors may face when pursuing legal action and take necessary measures to protect them from further harm.
2. Training & Community Engagement
- Conduct legal training sessions for police officers, community watch groups, women’s representatives, religious leaders, and other key stakeholders.
- Organize legal awareness campaigns in different zones of the camp to educate the community about GBV prevention and response.
3. Data Collection & Reporting
- Track and monitor GBV cases referred to court, ensuring proper case follow-up.
- Develop and update legal guidelines and training materials related to Tanzanian and international GBV laws.
- Maintain accurate legal documentation, following strict data protection and confidentiality protocols.
- Analyze case data to identify gaps in access to justice and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Prepare and submit timely reports, including weekly and monthly donor reports, as per DRC requirements.
4. Coordination & Advocacy
- Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure survivors’ rights are protected throughout the legal process.
- Advocate for justice system improvements, addressing any gaps in legal service delivery.
- Work with other service providers and NGOs to ensure a holistic approach to GBV case management.
- Participate in coordination meetings with legal actors and GBV response teams, strengthening multi-agency collaboration.

Required Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognized university.
Experience & Skills:
- At least three years of relevant work experience.
- Prior experience in humanitarian work is an added advantage.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to respect and support people with specific needs.
- Experience in providing technical support, training, and supervision.
- Excellent writing, reporting, and analytical skills.
- Strong organizational and planning abilities.
- Ability to work in a multicultural team environment.
- Proficiency in IT tools, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
Language Requirements:
- Fluency in English and Swahili (spoken and written).
- Knowledge of Kirundi is an advantage.
