About UNHCR and the Role

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is dedicated to protecting refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced persons worldwide. The Project Control Associate plays a key role in ensuring the success and compliance of UNHCR’s projects in Mozambique. This position provides financial oversight, quality assurance, and risk management for UNHCR-funded initiatives, working closely with implementing partners.

As a Project Control Associate, you will be responsible for monitoring project performance, ensuring financial accountability, and supporting program management. You will report to the Head of Office and work alongside multi-functional teams to maintain efficient project execution.


Key Responsibilities

  • Project Oversight: Monitor project performance, ensuring compliance with UNHCR policies and financial regulations.
  • Financial Control: Verify financial reports, review project budgets, and ensure proper fund allocation.
  • Risk Management: Identify and address project risks, ensuring funds are used effectively.
  • Partnership Coordination: Maintain strong relationships with implementing partners, ensuring smooth project execution.
  • Compliance & Reporting: Ensure project agreements align with UNHCR guidelines and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Project Closure Support: Assist in the timely closure of projects in coordination with program teams.
  • Training & Capacity Building: Provide guidance to colleagues and partners on financial management and compliance procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma + 3 years of relevant experience
    • Bachelor’s Degree + 2 years of relevant experience (preferred)
  • Fields of Study:
    • Accounting
    • Auditing
    • Finance
    • Business Administration
    • Project Management
  • Relevant Experience:
    • Financial reporting and auditing
    • Project management and risk assessment
    • Experience working with humanitarian organizations (NGOs, UN agencies) is a plus

Technical Skills:

  • Financial accounting (IFRS, IPSAS standards)
  • Risk management and project assurance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ERP systems
  • Strong analytical and coordination skills

Languages:

  • Required: English and Portuguese (B2 level or higher)
  • Additional languages are a plus
