Legal Officer Position at IRMCT – March 2025
About the Organization
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) is seeking a Legal Officer to join its Office of the President at the Arusha branch. This role is crucial in supporting the President and the Chef de Cabinet and Principal Legal Advisor. The appointed candidate will report directly to the Chef de Cabinet and Principal Legal Advisor.
Key Responsibilities
As a Legal Officer at IRMCT, your main duties will include:
- Legal and Policy Advisory: Providing specialized legal, policy, administrative, and judicial advice on matters related to the President’s functions.
- Drafting and Reviewing Documents: Preparing and reviewing legal documents, including orders, decisions, policies, memoranda, reports, press releases, speeches, and official correspondence.
- Legal Research: Conducting and overseeing research on international humanitarian and criminal law while monitoring legal developments in regions relevant to IRMCT’s work.
- Sentence Enforcement & Detention Conditions: Assisting in the supervision of sentence enforcement, detention conditions, and independent inspections related to both branches of the Mechanism.
- External Relations & Press Matters: Providing legal support for public relations and media engagements.
- Representation: Representing the President’s Office in institutional meetings, boards, and committees.
- Collaboration & Coordination: Ensuring alignment with IRMCT’s mandate by working closely with other sections and branches of the Mechanism.
- Other Duties: Undertaking any additional responsibilities as assigned.

Educational Qualifications
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in law is required, with a preference for specialization in international, criminal, humanitarian, or administrative law.
- A first-level university degree in law combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered in place of an advanced degree.
Work Experience
- A minimum of five years of professional legal experience at a national or international level, with a focus on criminal law, international law, humanitarian law, or administrative law.
- Experience with UN International Criminal Tribunals is desirable.
- Familiarity with detention and sentence enforcement matters is an added advantage.
Language Requirements
- Proficiency in both English and French is mandatory for this role.

Special Considerations
- This temporary position is available until December 31, 2025.
- Current UN Secretariat staff members may be assigned under temporary placement rules.
