The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU), located at the National Institute for Medical Research campus in Mwanza, Tanzania, is a collaborative research unit affiliated with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the National Institute for Medical Research. Our mission is to improve health outcomes by developing and evaluating interventions against HIV and other health challenges through high-quality research, including clinical trials. MITU is also committed to strengthening research capacity in Tanzania and the East African region and translating research findings into effective health policies.

We are currently seeking a motivated and qualified individual to join our team in the following position:

Position: Laboratory Sample Archivist

MITU is looking for a diligent and detail-oriented Laboratory Sample Archivist to support its laboratory team. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Laboratory and other staff to ensure efficient and systematic management of laboratory samples for various research projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily management and archiving of laboratory samples in compliance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP), Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure accurate tracking, storage, and retrieval of laboratory samples, adhering to project requirements and regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborate with laboratory archivists and research teams to maintain an up-to-date database of archived samples with complete documentation.
  • Develop and implement data management plans for sample storage and tracking in assigned studies.

Specific Duties:

  • Accurately catalog and store laboratory samples, ensuring correct labeling and database tracking.
  • Work with the laboratory management team to ensure seamless data collection and entry for samples.
  • Provide regular reports on the status of archived samples to the laboratory manager.
  • Maintain quality control measures and ensure proper maintenance of archived samples.
  • Assist in sample retrieval when required and support audits or inspections related to sample management.
  • Coordinate with project teams when preparing samples for shipment to external laboratories.
  • Keep a precise record of retrieved samples for any purpose.

Essential Qualifications & Skills:

  • Diploma in Laboratory Technology or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory sample handling and management.
  • Experience with database management and sample tracking systems.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills and flexibility to travel when required.
  • Experience with laboratory data management systems.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in clinical research sample management.
  • Familiarity with laboratory data management software and tracking tools.
  • Interest in clinical or public health research.
  • Training in Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP).
  • Registration with the relevant professional board.
