About FAO and the Role

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is dedicated to promoting food security and sustainable agricultural practices worldwide. As part of the Global Network of Farmers Markets project, FAO is working to strengthen small-scale farmers’ access to markets, support local product valuation, and connect farmers with consumers.

To support this initiative in Tanzania, FAO is looking for a Junior Specialist – Farmers Market Mapping Support to assist with the mapping and analysis of farmers’ markets across the country. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with FAO representatives and stakeholders to gather data, facilitate discussions, and support policy recommendations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Stakeholder Engagement & Research Coordination
    • Assist in organizing interviews with key informants and stakeholders to validate the mapping sample.
    • Participate in a three-day remote training on mapping methodologies.
    • Facilitate data collection through key informant interviews and focus group discussions.
  • Field Implementation & Data Monitoring
    • Oversee and monitor the data collection process in collaboration with the service provider.
    • Support the development of a farmers market database to streamline data analysis and reporting.
    • Ensure quality and consistency of collected data for accurate reporting.
  • Reporting & Policy Recommendations
    • Assist in organizing stakeholder meetings to present findings and discuss policy opportunities.
    • Contribute to the final report summarizing market trends, challenges, and potential interventions.
    • Provide insights to help shape future FAO policies and programs supporting farmers’ markets.
  • Additional Duties
    • Perform any other tasks as assigned by the FAO Representative and project supervisors.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Advanced university degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience in data collection, analysis, and agricultural program development.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in English and Swahili.
  • Nationality: Must be a Tanzanian national or a resident with a valid work permit.
