The Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT: Advancing Agricultural Innovation in Tanzania
The Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT has been making a significant impact in Tanzania from when it was brought up mid of 1980s. The organisation was brought up in Tanzania by Tanzania Agriculture Research Institute (TARI) under the Ministry of Agriculture and now CIAT operations is based at the Selian station near Arusha.
Our Work in Tanzania
Our efforts in Tanzania are primarily focused on:
✅ Common Bean Breeding – Developing the improved high-yield beans varieties
✅ Seed Systems – Enhancing access to quality seeds for smallholder farmers in Tanzania
✅ Forages and Soil Research – Improving the livestock feeding and soil fertility
✅ Value Chains – Strengthening the agricultural markets including farmer livelihoods
✅ Digital Phenotyping – Leveraging technology for the crop improvement
✅ Climate Resilience – Supporting the farmers in adapting to climate change

As a part of CGIAR and a global research initiative, CAIT also work in collaboration with local, national and international partners across Latin America in the Caribbean, Asia and Africa, under the mission of:

✔ Enhancing food and nutrition security
✔ Improving natural resources and ecosystems
Our Impact is on Bean Production
One of our most notable achievements from CIAT in Tanzania is the Bean Programme which focuses on producing climatic resilient bean varieties and the most common bean is Phaseolus vulgaris which is a vital crop for smallholder farmers that serves as both a nutritional staple and a source of income. Phaseolus vulgaris is a Tanzania leading leguminous crop that cover over 78% of cultivated legumes which has supported nearly 6 million rural households.
