Are you a strategic thinker with a passion for business development and communications? Laterite, a leading data, research, and analytics firm, is looking for a dynamic Business Development and Communications (BDC) Manager to lead and coordinate our BDC team.

We collaborate with universities, global think tanks, international NGOs, multilateral donors, and government agencies to create meaningful impact. With offices in the Netherlands, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Peru, we have a team of over 90 full-time staff and a network of 2,000+ field researchers.

Role Overview

As the Business Development and Communications Manager, you will lead Laterite’s BDC team, overseeing business development processes, communications strategies, and knowledge management initiatives. Your role will involve identifying new opportunities, managing proposals, and ensuring our communications align with Laterite’s mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead and mentor the BDC Analysts & Associates, overseeing daily team operations.
  • Develop and implement business development and communication strategies that align with Laterite’s long-term goals.

2. Business Development

  • Gain a deep understanding of the development research landscape across Laterite’s operating countries.
  • Work closely with country offices to coordinate outreach and business development efforts.
  • Manage Laterite’s proposal pipeline, from strategy to final submission, collaborating with the research team to create strong bids and grant applications.

3. Communications

  • Strengthen Laterite’s digital presence by managing and enhancing the website and social media platforms.
  • Develop engaging content, including blog posts and publications, to showcase Laterite’s work and impact.
  • Explore innovative ways to present data and research findings in an interactive and accessible format.

4. Knowledge Management

  • Maintain and expand Laterite’s internal knowledge base to support operational efficiency and team learning.

Who We’re Looking For

We seek a proactive, detail-oriented, and strategic professional with a strong background in business development, communications, and knowledge management—ideally within the development sector.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role within a research firm, NGO, consultancy, or related sector.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor teams effectively.
  • Strong experience in managing proposal pipelines and navigating donor procurement processes (e.g., World Bank, USAID, FCDO, private donors).
  • Expertise in strategic communications related to business development, content creation (e.g., blogs, reports), and outreach.
  • Familiarity with knowledge management tools (such as Confluence) is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Interest in social and economic research within the fields of agriculture, education, public health, livelihoods, and gender.
