About the Role
UNICEF is seeking a Child Protection Officer to support its programs in Kigoma, specifically focusing on child protection efforts. This role is crucial in implementing the National Plan of Action to End Violence Against Women and Children (2024/2025 – 2028/2029) and supporting interventions for child welfare in refugee camps such as Nyarugusu and Nduta.

Key Responsibilities
As a Child Protection Officer, you will:
- Research & Program Development: Conduct situation analyses to assess child protection trends and contribute to program design.
- Implementation Support: Provide technical, operational, and administrative support for UNICEF’s child protection programs.
- Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with government agencies, NGOs, and UN partners to strengthen interventions against violence towards children.
- Monitoring & Reporting: Track program progress, conduct field visits, and prepare reports to ensure transparency and effectiveness.
- Capacity Building: Assist in training government officials, partners, and stakeholders on best practices in child protection.
- Policy & Advocacy: Support the development of policies that enhance children’s welfare and ensure adherence to UNICEF’s strategic priorities.
Additionally, as a UN Volunteer, you will:
- Participate in UNV events and contribute to volunteerism initiatives.
- Share your field experiences through articles or reports for UNV publications.
- Mentor and support new UN Volunteers through the UNV Buddy Program.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of your assignment, you will have:
- Successfully coordinated the Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) theme within the Kigoma Joint Programme.
- Strengthened partnerships with implementing organizations, including refugee protection agencies.
- Delivered reports highlighting key achievements and volunteer contributions to child protection efforts.

Who Can Apply?
Eligibility Criteria
- Age: 18 – 80 years
- Nationality: Must be a Tanzanian citizen or legal resident
- Experience: At least 3 years of relevant work experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law, or a related field
- Language Requirements:
- Fluent in English (Required)
- Fluent in Swahili (Desirable)
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Strong experience in child protection or social development programs.
- Familiarity with UN system agencies or humanitarian organizations (an advantage).
- Ability to work in both development and emergency response settings.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Strong problem-solving and project management abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently under pressure.
Work Environment & Living Conditions
About Kasulu & Kigoma Region
- Climate: Moderate temperatures (21°C – 29°C), with a dry season in July and heavy rainfall in April.
- Transport: Accessible via air, train, and road networks; local transport includes taxis and Bajaj.
- Language: While Kiha is widely spoken, Swahili is the primary language of communication.
- Facilities: The region has adequate schools, healthcare services, and housing options to suit various needs.
