VisionFund Tanzania (VFT) is a subsidiary of VisionFund International, the microfinance arm of World Vision. It stands out due to its integrated approach, working alongside World Vision’s community development initiatives to alleviate rural poverty.

Currently, VFT is Tanzania’s fourth-largest and fastest-growing microfinance institution (MFI), boasting the highest portfolio quality, highly efficient operations (second lowest cost per borrower), and a solid foundation for sustainability. We seek a strong, strategic, and committed leader to serve as our Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and drive our operations to new heights.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategic Vision

  • Lead the MFI to uphold Christian values while delivering impactful financial services and training, particularly in rural Tanzania.
  • Develop a self-sustaining business with robust foundations in people, processes, and systems.
  • Drive operational efficiency and achieve ambitious financial and social performance targets.
  • Collaborate with World Vision to develop integrated livelihood programs and secure funding from donors and partners.
  • Oversee the transition process towards becoming a regulated deposit-taking institution.

Business Acumen & Compliance

  • Implement the vision, mission, and strategic objectives set by the Board and VisionFund International (VFI).
  • Maintain a balance between financial sustainability and social impact.
  • Ensure responsible resource management and uphold a culture of accountability.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans, including business and annual plans aligned with the institution’s goals.
  • Provide regular, transparent reporting to the Board and stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal controls and risk management systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including those set by the banking sector and tax authorities.

Fundraising & Financial Management

  • Engage with financial institutions, grant bodies, and creditors to secure funding.
  • Oversee financial projections, budgeting, and compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Implement effective financial management systems to ensure profitability and sustainability.

Risk & Portfolio Management

  • Maintain high portfolio quality in alignment with VisionFund International’s requirements.
  • Ensure proper pricing and delivery of savings products.
  • Oversee liquidity management to maintain sufficient financing for credit activities.
  • Safeguard the institution’s financial health and maintain a strong external rating.

Integration & Stakeholder Relations

  • Foster collaboration with World Vision, ensuring effective integration of strategies at both national and branch levels.
  • Actively engage in joint livelihood projects with World Vision.
  • Build strategic alliances to influence economic policies positively.
  • Promote VisionFund Tanzania’s mission, programs, and services to stakeholders and the public.

People Leadership & Organizational Culture

  • Provide Christ-centered leadership and cultivate a strong organizational culture.
  • Recruit and develop competent senior and middle management teams.
  • Establish effective staff development, succession planning, and performance management systems.
  • Foster a motivating work environment where employees thrive and contribute meaningfully.
  • Implement policies to ensure compliance with labor laws and VisionFund International guidelines.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Management, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of senior management experience in microfinance, banking, corporate environments, international business, or economic development.
  • Strong understanding of the microfinance industry and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience in deposit-taking institutions and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, strategic thinking, and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Passion for community development and commitment to driving positive change.

Work Environment & Travel Requirements:

  • Office-based with frequent travel to field locations (40% field, 60% office).
  • Domestic travel: 90%; International travel: 10%.
  • On-call availability beyond regular working hours.
  • Work permit required for non-local applicants.
